Ring-billed Gull @ Miller’s Pond (Smithtown)

No crop, all 12.3mp glory! Whoohoo! I was terrified at getting pooped on!

Looks like using all 51 autofocus area points slightly slows down autofocus. No biggie in most situations but these birds move so fast that I felt it slow down. Going down to 21 points (or lower) helped improve it.

Consistency

It is hard to be consistent in post processing without using presets. Our taste changes frequently as we see a detail, big or small, we can improve on.

When creating a good black and white photograph, it also has to look good in color. The exposure and tones must be correct, as well as the composition.

Now, I don’t know if I manage to have the correct exposure, tones and composition on this image but I certainly had a hard time choosing between the color or black and white version. Since I read and appreciate LensWork magazine, I am more inclined to promote black and white than color photography.

I should have corrected the perspective but I opt to just leave it as the original. I wanted to use a lens with a longer focal length but as I have said before, I regret not bringing all my gear with me that day. Doh!

Poke in the Eye

The Long Island Sound is being dredged lately hence the ugly black pipes littering the place. I guess mussells are unearthed in the process and the gulls are having a feast and sometimes fighting for them like in this photo.

How did you spend your Valentines day?

We spent it on a photowalk, of course!

She was using the Nikon D50 and one of our very first lens, the Tamron 70-300mm and dang, she got great pictures very much at par with the D300! Actually, the sharpness is even BETTER! My D300 excels in more pixels and higher FPS but the D50 is definitely NOT out yet! Superb quality at a cheap price. Now, does anyone have a Nikon D50 to sell? I’m interested!

Looking Back

Looking Back, originally uploaded by psilver [silverph.com].

When bird photographers and nature lovers visit Sunken Meadow, they usually head straight to the bridge. You see both sides and birds pass over it at certain times of the day which gives you an opportunity for "birds in flight" shots.

Still in a photographic slump. Haven’t tamed the D300 beast yet and photo opportunities have been scarce lately. I wish I could go to Europe/Asia/Antartica in a heartbeat.

Have a good night/day my dear Flickr friends.
